Running Away

Sing to God, sing praises to His name; Lift up a song for Him who rides through the desert—His name is the Lord—be in good spirits before Him.

Psalm 68:4 AMP

I ran away from home when I was 32 years old.

I had a rare opportunity to visit my parents by myself, and I took it. It wasn’t that I didn’t love my family – to the contrary, they were my whole world in that season. As a stay-at-home mom, I spent all of my moments pouring into my husband and those two little lives!

It’s just that I forgot to fill my own cup, too.

Psalm 68:4 sets the tone for the drive I took that day, through the Arizona desert. As I sang my heart out in the car, I knew I wasn’t alone.

Running Away

[Chorus] I’m running away,

I’m running to You.

I’m knocking at Your door, Lord –

what are You gonna do?

I’m leaving behind the things

that try to keep me from You.

I’m running away,

I’m running to You.

I left the carseat at home and I’m heading east

for a couple of days of respite –

a couple of days of peace.

But there’s this thought, keeps tugging

at the back of my mind –

the only way I’ll find You

is if I leave myself behind.

[Chorus]

Windows up, radio off, eyes on the road.

Why is it time moves so slowly

when I’m not at home?

My heartstrings are tied

to my little family,

but Lord, I hear You calling –

You want to spend some time with me.

[Chorus]

I’m really not sure just where the road will end today,

but I’m holding to Your promise –

Lord, You’ll never go away.

Please quiet my mind

so that I can hear from You.

Fill my heart with Your music,

that I might sing Your song anew.

I’m running away

I’m running to You.

I’m knocking at Your door, Lord –

what are You gonna do?

I’m leaving behind the things

that try to keep me from You.

I’m running away – just for the day –

and running to You.

Is there a “song” you need to be singing to God today?
A song of praise? Lament?

Or just a song to help you vent?

Boy did I need to hear this today. Thank you! This week we found out my daughter has reaction stress fractures in both her lower legs. It feels like we are going through a desert with this. But He is with us in the desert too. I will sing his praise and be in good spirits because he is with us.

I love this Brita!! I feel like God always reaches me through music and I sing all the time….when I’m happy and when I’m going through the hardest things I can imagine. Sometimes I cry through the whole song, but I just keep singing to remind myself He has my life in His hands. One of my favorite songs is Hills and Valleys. It has been an anthem when I’m happy and a reminder when I feel down and alone.
