Look At Me Now

I am the Eternal One. I Am is My name.
My beauty is unique, a weighty splendor all My own. And nothing else—no idols could possibly gain My praise.
Look here, what’s done is done and gone.
The now is new, and there’s hope in the not-yet.
I will tell you what’s to come, even before the events are brand-new.
So make up a song like none other. Sing a new song to the Eternal.
And let His praise echo clear across the earth.

Isaiah 42:8-10 The Voice

My first song came to life in an unfinished basement.

I was in high school, and I remember borrowing my Dad’s Radio Shack cassette recorder to capture this tune. Never mind that it was always cold down there, sitting on the concrete floor. I was so excited about my young and growing faith!

For Christmas that year, the pianist at my church offered to help me put together a tape with this song – and covers of a few others – for my family and friends. I am grateful for Diana and so many others like her, whose love for Jesus spilled over into my life at a time when I was just beginning to find my voice.

What I love most about this song is the way it reflects what I knew and believed at the time. My understanding of God’s Way has evolved throughout my faith journey, but I have no doubt He heard my honest cry and met me right where I was in these words – theological understanding aside.

Isn’t that what God does for us all – meets us in the middle of our real and messy lives, reminding us what’s done is done and that the future really is brimming with hope?

Look At Me Now

There I was –

not knowing where I’d been

trying so hard to fit in

trying to be someone that I know I’m not.

And the lies invited the devil to come inside

and he claimed my heart for his own

and I followed him.

But the light broke through

and my night turned to day

and I see the truth

in Your eyes when You say that You love me.

Well, look at me now!

[Chorus] Look at me now, Lord

I’m trying to live like You do

trying to do the things

that You want me to.

But look at me now, Lord

I’m failing

and somehow, Lord

I know that I have to give it all to You.

When You came

my past was over and gone.

I saw all of the things I’d done wrong

but You cared for me anyway –

You’ve forgiven me.

Now I know that You’ll never let me go

the promises that I find

in Your Word are true.

And Your peace comes in

chases all doubt away

and I know it’s real

when I hear You say that You love me.

Well, look at me now!

[Chorus]

The changes, they started inside

but you see them

you know it’s something I just can’t hide.

And I love Him!

His will is mine

His will is mine

His will is mine!

Just look at me now.

Look at me now, Lord

I’m trying to live like You do.

Trying to do the things

that You want me to.

But look at me now, Lord

I’m failing

and somehow, Lord

I know that I have to give it all to You.

I know I have to give it all to You.
